A Chittagong court has sentenced Monir Hossain, 30, to life imprisonment for the rape of a four-year-old child in the city's Baklia area.
Judge Syeda Hafsa Jhuma of the Chittagong Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal delivered the verdict on Wednesday afternoon. In addition to the life sentence, Hossain was fined Tk 50,000; failure to pay will result in an additional year in prison.
The judgment was notably swift, delivered just 26 days after the case was filed and within eight working days of the trial's commencement. Prosecutor Mahmudul Alam Chowdhury highlighted the rapid legal process, confirming that the accused was present in court and subsequently sent to jail.
In its observation, the court condemned child rape as a heinous crime against humanity, stating that such abuse not only causes physical harm but severely damages a child's mental development and confidence while striking at the moral foundation of society.
Background of the Case Police arrested Hossain on May 21 from the Chairmanghata area in Baklia. The arrest sparked massive local outrage. An agitated crowd surrounded the police vehicle, demanding the suspect be handed over to them. Police used tear gas and sound grenades to control the mob, which ultimately set fire to a police vehicle before Hossain could be safely transported to the station under the cover of darkness.
The victim's father filed a case the following day, May 22, under the Prevention of Oppression Against Women and Children Act. Police submitted the charge sheet within five working days, and the trial formally began on June 9.
Following the verdict, the child's mother expressed satisfaction with the swift delivery of justice, though she noted she would have preferred a death sentence.
In a separate high-profile ruling in Chittagong on Wednesday, a court sentenced Md. Abir to death for the kidnapping and murder of five-year-old Alina Islam Ayat.
