The global frenzy of the ongoing FIFA World Cup has breached the high walls of Tangail District Jail, bringing rare moments of entertainment to inmates following a special administrative initiative.
Tangail District Magistrate and Deputy Commissioner (DC) Sharifa Haque ordered the quick installation of new television sets across all 18 wards of the district prison. The initiative allows inmates to watch live matches of the tournament currently being hosted across North America.
DC Sharifa Haque said the decision stemmed from regular inspection visits where inmates repeatedly requested access to the matches. "Like any normal citizen, prisoners have the right to enjoy the universal joy of sports," she stated. "This humane gesture aims to ease their confinement."
Tangail District Jail Superintendent Md. Anwar Hossain reported a massive surge in enthusiasm and joy among the prison population since the screens went live. He noted that the screen time is not just improving the inmates' mental well-being, but is also exerting a highly positive impact on maintaining internal jail discipline.
