Environmental organization 'Sabuj Prithibi' observed World Environment Day by distributing free saplings at the Central Shaheed Minar and launching a tree-plantation drive along the Lauhajang River banks on Wednesday.
The day-long campaign aimed to build public awareness about climate change and deforestation. Environmentalists and volunteers handed out a variety of fruit, timber and medicinal saplings to students, pedestrians and local residents, urging them to plant trees around their homes to help restore ecological balance.
Inaugurated by Amir Hossain Babu, Executive Director of Shapla Universal Society, the event was chaired by Shaheed Mahmud, Founder and General Secretary of Sabuj Prithibi. Following the distribution drive, activists moved to the west side of the Kagmari Bridge, planting rows of trees to stabilize and protect the banks of the vulnerable Lauhajang River.
Prominent environmental advocates spoke at the event, including Rabiul Islam Chunnu (UBINIG Tangail Coordinator), Ekdil Hossain (BAPA Tangail Joint Secretary), Said Al Mamun, Erfanuzzaman Runu, and Sharmin Alam. They emphasized that protecting local river systems and expanding green cover are critical steps for Bangladesh to combat global warming.
