Bangladesh and Malaysia have reached a policy-level agreement to reopen the Malaysian labor market to Bangladeshi workers with the first group expected to arrive by late August.
Prime Minister’s Adviser and PMO spokesperson Mahdi Amin announced the decision following successful bilateral discussions in Kuala Lumpur. The revised recruitment framework prioritizes transparency and aims to significantly lower migration costs for workers.
To ensure a fair start, the state-owned Bangladesh Overseas Employment and Services Limited (BOESL) has been requested to manage the initial phase of recruitment. Mahdi emphasized a strict zero-tolerance policy against syndicate monopolies agencies previously implicated in corruption or unethical practices have had their licenses canceled and will be entirely excluded from the new system.
Government officials urge prospective migrant workers to remain patient, follow official guidelines and avoid dishonest brokers making false promises. Technical cooperation between the two nations' ministries will begin shortly to finalize the operational details.
Beyond labor migration recent talks between Bangladeshi Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim explored broader strategic partnerships. Discussions included expanding Malaysian investments in Bangladesh through corporations like Axiata and MMC Ports as well as potential gas supplies from Petronas to support Bangladesh's energy needs.
Migrant workers remain a cornerstone of this bilateral relationship, vital to Malaysia's development and Bangladesh's remittance-driven economy. This reopening is expected to create safe new employment opportunities and drive long-term economic growth for both nations.
