Police have urged the public not to be misled by Facebook rumors regarding the death of 21-year-old housewife Sumaiya Akhter Mitu, promising a swift and impartial investigation based on medical evidence.
Bhola Superintendent of Police (SP) Md. Shahidullah Kawsar made the appeal during a press briefing at his office on Wednesday afternoon. He stated that police recovered Mitu's body on June 3 from a rented flat in the Ukil Para area of Bhola town.
According to initial police reports, Mitu's body was found lying on a bed. Her husband, Md. Sohag and his family had reportedly taken the body down from a hanging position, alerted Mitu’s parents, and fled the scene before law enforcement arrived.
The incident has triggered overlapping legal actions from the victim's parents. Mitu's father, Md. Bashir Ahmed filed a police case accusing four individuals including the husband, mother-in-law, and sister-in-law of abetment to suicide. Meanwhile, Mitu's mother filed a separate murder petition in court. Following her petition, the court asked the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bhola Sadar Model Police Station to clarify what administrative actions have been taken.
"We are investigating both the suicide abetment case and the allegations raised by the mother in court," SP Kawsar said. "However, speculative posts on social media are complicating the situation. We have contacted the doctors for the official autopsy report, which will conclusively determine the cause of death."
Family sources revealed that the night before her death, Mitu sent a voice recording to her sister detailing severe physical abuse by her husband. The victim's family, originally from Daulatkhan Upazila, demands justice as police continue their drive to apprehend the absconding suspects.
