Twenty-four people, including 23 students from Uttara University, were injured when their campus bus lost control and overturned on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Gazipur on Wednesday afternoon.
The accident took place around 4:30 PM in the Rajendrapur area. According to Uttara University Transport Manager Humayun Kabir, the bus was carrying 30 students from the university's Uttara campus to the Mauna intersection when it veered off the road and flipped over.
Local responders and university authorities quickly rescued the victims and rushed them to Al-Hera Hospital at the Mauna intersection.
"Fortunately, none of the students sustained life-threatening injuries," said Uttara University's medical officer, Dr. Tausik Sarkar. "Most suffered cuts from shattered window glass or minor bruises from the impact inside the vehicle."
However, the bus driver and a student named Trina from the Bengali department were transferred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. The university administration confirmed it is bearing all medical and post-medical support costs for the victims.
The injured students have been identified as Purabi and Mahima (CSE); Laila, Sara, Afrin, and Limon (FDT); Shanto, Salman, Nusrat, and Banyen (BBA); Bappi (Mathematics); Turin, Neha, Nowshi Tabasum, Miraj, Bijoy, and Tithi (English); Nazmul (Textile); Trina (Bengali); and Azhamira, Meem, Oishee, and Fahima (DNFDT).
Gazipur Sadar Metropolitan Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Aminul Islam confirmed that law enforcement has recovered the damaged bus from the highway. "Traffic has returned to normal, and we are investigating the cause of the accident before taking legal action," the OC added.
