Professor Dr S. M. Hemayet Jahan officially assumed office as the 10th Vice-Chancellor of Patuakhali Science and Technology University (PSTU) on Wednesday.

He arrived at the university's main gate at around 10:30 am, where he was formally welcomed by teachers, officers, employees and students through a reception programme organized in his honour.

After taking charge, the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor paid tribute at the university's Central Shaheed Minar by placing a floral wreath. He was also accorded a guard of honour by members of the Bangladesh National Cadet Corps (BNCC) and the university Ansar unit.

Later, at around 11:30 am, he exchanged greetings with teachers, officers, employees and students at a reception held at the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) conference room.

The programme began with the recitation of the Holy Quran, followed by prayers. It was chaired by Professor Dr Md Mamun Or Rashid, President of the University Teachers' Association of Bangladesh (UTAB), PSTU Unit, and newly appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of Barishal. The event was moderated by Dr A. B. M. Saiful Islam.

Addressing the gathering as chief guest, Prof Hemayet Jahan expressed gratitude for being entrusted with the responsibility of leading the university.

"By the infinite mercy of Almighty Allah, I have been given the opportunity to serve as the Vice-Chancellor of this university," he said.

Emphasising the role of faculty members, he noted that meaningful progress would not be possible without the active cooperation of teachers.

"The support of teachers is essential for moving the university forward. No plan can be implemented successfully without your cooperation. We must work together to ensure the overall development of the university," he said.

Addressing students, the Vice-Chancellor said he had both short-term and long-term plans for the institution, with students remaining the top priority.

"Our foremost priority will be the students. We will focus on enhancing their employability, expanding facilities and opportunities, and ensuring a modern, student-friendly academic environment. I want this university to become an ideal centre of knowledge and learning for both teachers and students," he said.

He further stated that he would make every effort to elevate PSTU's standing at both national and international levels with the support of all stakeholders.

"Our goal is to transform this university into a world-class institution of higher education," he added.

The Vice-Chancellor also announced that an investigation commission would be formed to examine allegations of irregularities and corruption that occurred at the university in the past.

Following the Zuhr prayer, he planted one fruit-bearing and one forest tree sapling in front of the administrative building.

According to an official notification signed by Md Shah Alam Siraj, Assistant Secretary of the Secondary and Higher Education Division (Public Universities Branch), Prof Hemayet Jahan was appointed Vice-Chancellor of PSTU by order of the President on Monday.
