The long-awaited realignment of the dangerous curve at the Kapilmuni Fakirbasa intersection in Paikgachha has finally been completed, ending five years of legal hurdles and public suffering.
The renovation was successfully executed under the strict supervision of district and upazila administrations alongside the Roads and Highways Department (RHD). This infrastructural development has brought significant relief to local residents, business owners, and daily commuters.
The initiative to straighten and modernize the intersection is a crucial part of the Betagram-Tala-Paikgachha-Koyra Regional Highway Development Project. However, the work had been stalled for years due to design disputes and legal complications concerning the acquisition of 11.5 decimals of land and the subsequent compensation to owners.
Consequently, this vital section of the road remained in a dilapidated state for half a decade. Potholes turned into dust bowls during the dry season and dangerous, waterlogged traps during the monsoon. The poor drainage also caused severe waterlogging in the adjacent market area, severely impacting local businesses and nearby educational institutions.
Hundreds of vehicles, including passenger buses and heavy cargo trucks, use this Khulna-Koyra route daily. Locals noted that the risky blind curve and degraded road surface were frequent sites for accidents. Following administrative intervention, the realignment work officially began on June 6 and was recently completed without further delay.
The broader highway mega-project aims to upgrade the 60-kilometer regional route into two lanes, which includes straightening 34 dangerous curves across Dumuria, Tala, Paikgachha, and Koyra upazilas. Though initiated in 2020, various complications delayed the project, forcing two extensions in both budget and timeline.
Project officials assured the public that the realignment follows modern, software-generated designs to ensure absolute neutrality. They confirmed that affected landowners with valid documentation will receive fair compensation according to the law. Officials also urged locals to ignore rumors spread by vested interest groups attempting to hinder regional development.
With the Fakirbasa intersection now safe for travel, local residents are demanding the rapid completion of the remaining highway project to ensure a modern, sustainable road communication network for the region.
