Eight children have died from confirmed or suspected measles across Bangladesh over the past 24 hours, alongside 1,092 newly reported suspected infections.
The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) confirmed these figures in a press release issued on Monday (June 8). According to the health directorate, one of the recent fatalities was officially confirmed as measles, while the other seven children died exhibiting severe measles symptoms. During this same 24-hour period, 93 new cases were officially confirmed through testing.
The country has been battling a widespread outbreak since mid-March. Between March 15 and June 8, the DGHS recorded 80,104 suspected measles cases nationwide, of which 9,779 have been officially confirmed.
The mortality rate remains a serious public health concern. Since March 15, the outbreak has claimed a total of 628 lives. This includes 92 confirmed measles deaths and 536 children who died while exhibiting suspected symptoms.
Despite the high infection rate, recovery numbers offer some hope. Over the ongoing outbreak period, 65,237 patients required hospitalization for suspected measles, but 61,278 have successfully recovered and been discharged.
