A brother and sister from Sreepur in Gazipur died on the same day on Sunday, leaving their family and the entire community in grief. They were buried side by side on Monday morning.
Alhaj Anisur Rahman, former mayor of Sreepur Municipality, had been ill for some time with kidney complications. He passed away on Sunday afternoon while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Uttara, Dhaka.
When news of his death reached the family, his younger sister Rashida Akhter, who was said to be very close to him, suffered a stroke from the shock. She was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
According to relatives, the two siblings were inseparable close in age and lifelong companions through every joy and hardship. Their deaths on the same day struck many as an extraordinary reflection of that bond.
On Monday morning, funeral prayers were held on the school grounds adjoining the family home in Madhkhala, Sreepur Upazila. Thousands of people from surrounding areas attended. Anisur Rahman's janaza was held first, followed by Rashida Akhter's. Both were subsequently buried side by side in the family cemetery.
The Member of Parliament for Gazipur-3, Rafiqul Islam Bachchu, attended the funeral alongside leaders of political, social, and cultural organisations, local public representatives, and residents. Many who attended described the double loss as deeply uncommon.
