An eighth-grade student, Eva Akhter (13), was found dead in an apparent suicide at her home in Shekarkathi village, Nalchiti upazila, on Sunday night (June 7).

Eva was the daughter of local auto-rickshaw driver Md. Shahid Sikder and a student at Jurkathi Z.A. Bhutto Secondary School.

According to her family, Eva's mother, Achma Begum, was in an adjacent room when the incident occurred at approximately 10:30 pm. Her father returned home from Barishal shortly after. When Eva did not respond to his calls, her parents entered the room and found her unresponsive, hanging by a scarf. They immediately brought her down, but she had already passed away.

Eva’s uncle, Abdur Rashid Sikder, stated that the family is completely unaware of any reason behind her death, noting there had been no recent disputes or arguments at home.

Police arrived at the scene later that night to recover the body. Nalchiti Police Station Officer-in-Charge (Investigation), Md. Ashraf Ali, confirmed the incident.

"The body has been sent to the Jhalakathi Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death," OC Ashraf Ali said. "Necessary legal actions will be taken once we receive the medical report."
