Education must focus on developing skilled, humane individuals rather than merely granting academic certificates, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister for Health Affairs Dr. SM Ziauddin Haider stated on Wednesday.

Speaking as the chief guest at the freshman orientation for the 2026–27 academic year at Jhalakathi Government College, Dr. Haider highlighted government initiatives aimed at transitioning Bangladesh’s education system from certificate-oriented to skill-based to curb graduate unemployment.

"The purpose of education goes beyond obtaining degrees" Dr. Haider told the incoming class of 450 students. "Students must broaden their knowledge beyond textbooks, expand their critical thinking, and build strong moral values and social responsibility."

Dr. Haider urged students to lead community efforts against drug abuse and actively participate in environmental conservation. He encouraged students to dedicate at least one day a week to keeping their campus clean, contributing to a healthier local environment.

Addressing student welfare, he pledged to work toward providing college transport buses and indoor sports facilities to promote physical fitness alongside academic pursuits.

The event was presided over by College Principal Professor Mohammad Jahangir Hossain. Special guests included Superintendent of Police Marine Sultana, District Council Administrator Advocate Md. Shahadat Hossain and Additional Deputy Commissioner (Education and ICT) Bashir Gazi alongside faculty members, local dignitaries and students.
