Explosive-laden drones struck bases belonging to Iranian Kurdish opposition groups in northern Iraq on Wednesday according to security sources and group officials.
The primary attack targeted a base of the Komala party in the Alana Valley, located east of Erbil in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI). In an official statement the group accused Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of launching two suicide drones at around 8:30 a.m. local time. The strike caused minor material damage but no casualties were reported.
A separate suspected drone strike was also reported in Tawella located in Halabja province though local authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding casualties or damage.
Tehran has repeatedly targeted Iranian Kurdish opposition bases across the autonomous Kurdistan region, accusing the groups of conducting cross-border attacks into Iran. Wednesday's incidents follow several similar drone and missile strikes over recent weeks in Erbil and Sulaymaniyah.
The regional government in Erbil has consistently asserted its neutrality in broader regional conflicts while condemning foreign strikes on its territory. Tensions remain high after Tehran designated the Kurdistan Region as hosting "hostile bases" subject to preemptive action under its security doctrine.
