Twelve people were injured on Monday morning during a clash between two rival groups of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in Pahardanga, under Kalia Upazila's Naragati Police Station. Several houses were vandalized and looted during the violence.
Additional police have been deployed to the scene to defuse extreme tensions running through the area.
Local sources said the clash stemmed from a long-standing dispute over local dominance, control of the local cattle market, and the upcoming Union Parishad elections. The rivalry involves supporters of Thakur Abul Azam and those backing Iqbal Sikder.
The tension escalated into an open clash on Monday morning following a minor argument. Supporters from both sides chased each other, threw bricks, and attacked local residences.
At least 12 people were injured. While some received local first aid, those seriously wounded were rushed to Gopalganj Sadar and Khulna Sadar hospitals. The violence sparked widespread panic, forcing many residents to flee to safer areas.
Naragati Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdur Rahim confirmed the incident, stating that law enforcement remains on high alert and additional forces are stationed on-site to keep the peace.
