Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has expelled Satkhira-4 lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam following an internal investigation that found evidence of what the party called "moral lapses" after a viral video sparked widespread controversy.

The decision was made at an emergency meeting of the party's Central Executive Council on Wednesday afternoon at the Opposition Leader's official residence on Mintoo Road, Dhaka. Jamaat Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman chaired the meeting.

According to the party an organizational probe into allegations reported by various media outlets confirmed the lapses, prompting the council to expel Gazi Nazrul Islam. The party said it would immediately inform the Election Commission of his removal.

Earlier that day, residents of Shyamnagar upazila in Satkhira staged a protest demanding his removal. Under the banner of Shyamnagar Sachetan Nagorik demonstrators marched through the upazila's main roads around noon before gathering at the Shyamnagar Press Club where they burned an effigy of the lawmaker.

The controversy began after a video circulated on social media Monday night, showing the MP in an intimate situation with a woman. Amid the backlash Gazi Nazrul Islam posted on Facebook claiming the woman in the video is his second wife.
