A Dhaka court on Thursday placed Satkhira-4 lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam on a fresh four-day remand in a case filed over the abetment of suicide in the death of his second wife Mariam Khatun.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ripon Hossain passed the order after the Detective Branch (DB) of police produced Nazrul in court following the end of his initial four-day interrogation. Investigating Officer Inspector Mohammad Salahuddin requested a seven-day extension also arguing that further questioning is essential to verify the lawmaker’s claims and uncover the true circumstances behind the incident.
According to police Nazrul told investigators that 20-year-old Mariam was emotionally sensitive and committed suicide due to domestic disputes. However, the case filed by Mariam’s father SM Masum Billah, alleges she faced persistent physical and mental torture from Nazrul and his first wife Maksuda Islam, after their marriage in June.
Mariam’s body was recovered hanging from a ceiling fan inside flat 203 of NAM Bhaban on Manik Mia Avenue on September 20. Police and crime scene units recovered evidence from the scene, including a suicide note.
Nazrul and his first wife were arrested on September 21. Court sources confirmed that Maksuda and a third accused Mariam’s uncle Md Obaidur Rahman have already been sent to jail after completing their respective police remands.
