Prime Minister Orders Urgent Action to Resolve RMG Sector Hurdles

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed relevant authorities to urgently remove operational hurdles facing Bangladesh’s garment industry to sustain the country's economic growth.

The directive came during a meeting with a Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) delegation led by its President Mahmud Hasan Khan, at the Cabinet Division office in the Bangladesh Secretariat on Wednesday afternoon.

According to PM’s Deputy Press Secretary Hasan Shipul, BGMEA representatives briefed the premier on pressing industry challenges, prioritizing the critical need for an uninterrupted supply of gas and electricity. The delegation also presented short- and long-term proposals to stabilize the sector.

In response, the Prime Minister instructed relevant ministries and divisions to take immediate action. Acknowledging the systemic nature of the crisis, he noted that while long-standing issues will take time to fully address that immediate steps will be taken to resolve problems that can be fixed right away.

Rahman sought the BGMEA’s cooperation in driving national prosperity also emphasizing that infrastructure improvements for the apparel sector will directly accelerate broader economic growth. He also highlighted the government’s recent "business-friendly budget," reaffirming his administration's commitment to solving public and commercial challenges.

“The government will do whatever is necessary to support the growth of this industry,” the Prime Minister assured the business leaders.

The meeting concluded with BGMEA leaders presenting a commemorative crest to the premier.

The meeting was also attended by Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir, Prime Minister’s Advisers Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir and Mahdi Amin and BNP National Executive Committee Special Secretary Belayet Hossain Mridha.
