Banned 'China Duari' Nets Threaten Native Fish in Nalchiti

The unrestricted and illicit use of officially banned 'China Duari' nets across canals, rivers, wetlands and flooded paddy fields in Nalchiti Upazila, Jhalakathi has posed a severe threat to native fish populations and aquatic ecosystems during the ongoing monsoon season.

Local residents report that unscrupulous fishermen are using these synthetic, fine-mesh ring nets extensively because they are inexpensive, durable and can remain submerged for months without rotting. Unlike traditional gear, these nets indiscriminately trap and kill fish larvae, eggs, fry and small aquatic organisms, drastically hindering the breeding cycle of native species.

Helal Talukder a resident of Nalchiti Municipality, noted that while current nets previously damaged local fish populations, China Duari nets are accelerating the destruction. Community members and educators warned that indigenous fish species are rapidly disappearing from local markets forcing consumers to rely on farm-bred hybrid varieties. They called for immediate strict monitoring of the production, distribution and sale of these illegal nets.

Addressing the issue, Nalchiti Upazila Fisheries Officer Nazmul Hasan confirmed that enforcement drives against banned fishing gear are conducted throughout the year. He stated that a special joint operation will be launched across the upazila shortly to curb the seasonal surge in net usage.

Nalchiti Upazila Nirbahi Officer (In-Charge) Rizvi Ahmed Sabuj reiterated that China Duari nets are strictly illegal under government regulations. He assured that the administration will take strict legal action against both vendors secretly selling the nets in local markets and individuals deploying them in open water bodies.
