A massive monitor lizard, weighing approximately 37 kg and measuring 7 feet 6 inches in length, was rescued by local residents in Tajumuddin upazila on Saturday morning. The rare sight of such an enormous reptile caused a massive stir among local villagers.
The lizard was discovered around 11:00 AM in a thick bush adjacent to Anand Bazar in the Sonapur Union of the upazila.
According to local accounts, a resident was walking through a garden path toward the local market when he noticed unusual movements in the nearby bushes. Upon closer inspection, he discovered the massive lizard preying on a goat kid.
The resident alerted nearby villagers, who gathered to capture the reptile safely. Local community members noted that an animal of this size had never been spotted in the area before. Recognizing the ecological value of the creature, the villagers promptly informed the local forest department.
A rescue team from the Daulatkhan Range of the Coastal Forest Department arrived at the scene shortly after being notified and took the monitor lizard into their custody.
Bhola Coastal Forest Department Assistant Conservator of Forests, Md. Moniruzzaman, confirmed the event later that evening.
"This is a remarkably large and rare specimen of a monitor lizard, which is not commonly seen in residential settings," Moniruzzaman stated. "These animals are vital natural resources, and it is our collective duty to protect them. They usually wander into human settlements only in search of food."
Wildlife officials reported that the lizard is currently being monitored at the range office. It will be released back into the protected reserve forest once teams confirm it is fit and ready to return to its natural habitat.
