A 9-foot python was safely rescued from a fisherman’s net in KC Chalitabunia village, Morelganj upazila of Bagerhat, on Monday morning.
Local fisherman Mujibar Rahman Hawlader discovered the snake, weighing approximately 20 kilograms, trapped in his net. Prompted by alerts from residents, wildlife rescuer Russell Kabiraj promptly arrived at the scene and secured the python without injury.
Before officially handing it over to authorities, Kabiraj briefly displayed the rescued snake at the Morelganj Upazila headquarters to satisfy the curiosity of a large gathered crowd. He praised the villagers for their responsible actions, stating, "Thanks to the locals' awareness and quick initiative, the python suffered no harm. It is a national asset."
Abdul Hakim, Officer-in-Charge of the Gulishakhali Patrol Outpost under the Sundarbans East Forest Division, confirmed the handover near the local model mosque. He stated that Forest Department officials will release the healthy python back into the Sundarbans later in the afternoon.
