The Narail district administration has initiated steps to preserve two major historical landmarks in Lohagara Upazila. On Thursday (April 2), Deputy Commissioner Dr. Mohammad Abdus Salam inspected the ancestral homes of renowned novelist Dr. Niharanjan Gupta and the legendary Gauri Sen in Itna village.
During the visit, officials assessed the architectural condition and historical significance of the structures. Dr. Niharanjan Gupta, a celebrated writer across the subcontinent, was born in Itna on June 6, 1911. His father, Satya Ranjan Gupta, constructed the family home in 1826. Nearby stands the contemporary residence of Gauri Sen, the wife of wealthy merchant Hemant Sen.
While the Department of Archaeology has officially recognized Dr. Gupta’s house as a historical site, local residents noted that only a boundary wall has been built, with no further renovation. Similarly, Gauri Sen’s house remains in a state of decay.
The Deputy Commissioner assured that the administration will complete the necessary formalities to begin renovations promptly. The project aims to safeguard these sites as "historical establishments," ensuring future generations can connect with Narail's rich cultural heritage.
Accompanied by the Deputy Commissioner were Executive Magistrate Md. Badiuzzaman and Lohagara Assistant Commissioner (Land) Sadia Islam.
