Four people were killed and seven others injured after a covered van collided with a microbus in the College Bazar area of Karnaphuli Upazila in Chattogram.
The accident occurred at around 2am early Sunday (September 13) on the Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar Highway in the College Bazar area.
The deceased were identified as Niaz Morshed, 22, his younger sister Mimtah, 17, their maternal uncle Mohammad Ferdous Alam, 55, and microbus driver Mohammad Munna. They were residents of the Eidgah area of Cox’s Bazar.
According to eyewitnesses, a covered van coming from the direction of Shah Amanat Bridge in Chattogram was making a U-turn at high speed near College Bazar when it collided with a microbus travelling from the opposite direction.
The microbus was heading towards Chattogram from Ukhia in Cox’s Bazar. Several passengers sustained serious injuries in the collision.
Ferdous Alam and Mimtah died at the scene. The injured were subsequently rescued and taken to hospital, where two more people were declared dead by doctors on duty.
Seven injured people were admitted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital. Their conditions were also reported to be critical.
Nur Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Karnaphuli Police Station, confirmed that four people were killed in the road accident.
Police have seized both the damaged microbus and the covered van involved in the collision. However, the driver and helper of the covered van fled the scene, the OC said.
