The Louhajang Upazila administration has handed over a mentally distressed mother and her newborn daughter to their relatives as part of a humanitarian initiative.
The handover took place at Life Aid Hospital in the Chandra Bari area of Louhajang around noon on Sunday, September 13.
The event, arranged by the Louhajang Upazila administration, was attended by Upazila Social Services Officer Md Ujjal Munshi, hospital authorities, Md Kausar Talukder, president of Kumarbhog Union BNP, Louhajang Upazila Mohila Dal President Aleya Begum, local journalists and prominent members of the community.
The administration had taken measures to ensure the safety and care of the mentally distressed woman and her newborn. Following the necessary formalities, the mother and baby were handed over to their relatives.
Family members present at the event expressed their appreciation for the humanitarian initiative taken by the Upazila administration.
Officials said the administration would continue such humanitarian efforts to support vulnerable and disadvantaged people and ensure their safety.
The woman had reportedly been staying around the Chandra Bari bus stand, local market and surrounding areas for several days. On the morning of Friday, September 11, she suddenly went into labour. Local residents took her to the nearby Life Aid Hospital, where she gave birth to a baby girl.
Local businessman Abdul Mannan said he had noticed the woman, whom he described as mentally distressed, wandering around the area for some time. He was also the first to notice that she was pregnant and subsequently asked local residents to keep an eye on her.
After the woman gave birth on Friday morning, the matter was reported to the officer-in-charge of Padma Bridge North Police Station, the Upazila administration and the Department of Social Services.
Upon receiving the information, Louhajang Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Farzana Bobby Mitu quickly went to the scene. She was accompanied by the Upazila Social Services Officer, Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer and Upazila Agriculture Officer.
Through the Upazila administration and the Upazila Social Services Office, powdered milk and other necessary supplies were provided for the newborn. After medical examinations, the mother and baby were kept under the supervision of Life Aid Hospital and in the custody of businessman Abdul Mannan's family.
On Sunday afternoon, with the assistance of the Upazila administration, the mother and her newborn daughter were finally handed over to the woman's brother Sayem and sister-in-law Mariam Akter.
Louhajang Upazila Social Services Officer Md Ujjal Munshi said that after receiving information from local residents, arrangements were made for the mother and newborn to receive necessary medical care.
He said that after the woman's family members were located, the mother and newborn were handed over to her brother Sayem and sister-in-law Mariam Akter through a legal process, in the presence of respected members of the local community.
