The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) says it has identified a woman whose dismembered body was found in a suitcase and plastic sack in a Gazipur canal and has arrested three people in connection with her murder.
The victim was identified as Dolly Akter (30) a divorced garment worker who lived alone in Joydebpur. The arrested include Mission Islam (22) who PBI says was in a five-year relationship with Dolly his mother Banu Akter (43) and his friend Mizanur Rahman Milton (24). All three have given confessional statements before a court under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
According to PBI, the body was discovered on September 11 after a suitcase and sack were spotted floating in a canal near the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway in Bhabanipur. Her identity was unknown until investigators used crime scene analysis, digital tracing and local intelligence to trace her.
Investigators say Mission Islam, harbouring resentment over unresolved issues about marriage, killed Dolly at his rented home on the night of September 8 after sedating her. He allegedly dismembered the body to fit it into a suitcase, then enlisted Milton's help under the pretext of moving house to transport and dump the remains.
PBI recovered the weapon, packaging material, the victim's ID card and a phone from the accused's home along with CCTV evidence.
Gazipur PBI Superintendent Md. Rakibul Akter said the case though initially difficult due to the body's condition was resolved swiftly. The victim's brother has filed a murder case against unknown persons the investigators are probing possible further involvement.
