The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced that the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will remain a biennial tournament and reversing its previous decision to switch to a four-year cycle.
CAF’s Executive Committee unanimously agreed to reinstate the two-year schedule to protect and promote the interests of African football with its 54 member associations and players competing globally.
Under the abandoned plan announced last December, AFCON was set to move to a four-year cycle with a proposed CAF Nations League taking over as the continent's biennial tournament. However the CAF concluded that the Nations League would require years to generate sufficient revenue to support African football.
Speaking on the reversal, CAF President Patrice Motsepe emphasized that the decision aligns with the commercial and sporting interests of the continent.
Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda will co-host the next edition in 2027 followed by tournaments in 2028, 2031 and 2033. CAF confirmed there will be no tournament in 2030 also upholding its policy to avoid holding AFCON during FIFA World Cup years.
