John Campbell scored an unbeaten half-century to lead the West Indies’ reply after left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican took five wickets to bowl Bangladesh out for 272 on the second day of the Test in Dhaka.

At tea, the West Indies were 89 for 1, trailing Bangladesh by 183 runs. Campbell was unbeaten on 53, while Tagenarine Chanderpaul had made 21 not out. The pair added 60 runs for the second wicket after Brandon King was dismissed early.

Play was stopped because of bad light 10 minutes before the scheduled tea break, forcing the umpires to call an early tea at 2pm local time.

Bangladesh had resumed the day on 213 for 3 but lost their remaining seven wickets for 59 runs. Shadman Islam was the standout performer for the hosts, completing his third Test century before being dismissed for 105.

Campbell survived two chances during his innings. Nayeem Hasan dropped him at point when he was on five, failing to hold a straightforward catch to his left. Shoriful Islam later dropped a return catch when Campbell had reached 22.

Despite the reprieves, Campbell batted confidently, driving fluently against Hasan Mahmud, who generated movement with the wobble seam. Campbell also struck a four and a six off consecutive deliveries from Mehidy Hasan Miraz to bring up his sixth Test half-century.

West Indies lost King in the fifth over when Hasan Mahmud found the opener’s outside edge. Substitute wicketkeeper Jaker Ali took the catch.

Chanderpaul made an encouraging start, finding several boundaries with the square cut as he partnered Campbell to take the visitors to 89 for 1.

Earlier, Shadman needed only two balls on the second morning to complete his century after finishing the first day unbeaten on 99. He was eventually trapped lbw by debutant left-arm spinner Joshua Bishop for 105. Shadman faced 234 balls and hit 11 fours.

Towhid Hridoy lasted just two deliveries in the morning before missing a full delivery from Bishop while attempting to drive through the covers. He was dismissed for his overnight score of 42, having been taken off the field on a stretcher on the first evening because of cramps.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Litton Das offered brief resistance, adding 32 runs for the sixth wicket.

Warrican ended Mehidy’s innings with a delivery that spun between his bat and pad. Shamar Joseph then had Nayeem Hasan and Hasan Mahmud caught behind.

Warrican wrapped up the Bangladesh innings by having Taijul Islam caught behind before trapping Shoriful Islam lbw for a duck. He finished with figures of 5 for 53, securing his fourth five-wicket haul in Test cricket.

Bishop took two wickets for 61 runs, while Joseph claimed two for 41. Bangladesh’s total of 272 left the West Indies trailing by 183 runs at tea, with Campbell and Chanderpaul looking to build a substantial partnership.
