Train communication between Dhaka and the country's northern and southern regions came to a complete halt on Thursday morning after a carriage of the intercity Nilsagar Express derailed near Mohera Railway Station in Mirzapur, Tangail.
The incident occurred around 9:30 AM when the Chilahati bound express train was passing through the area. According to witnesses and railway officials, the wheels of a rear carriage slipped off the track with a sudden loud noise. The train driver acted promptly and brought the locomotive to a sudden stop, preventing major casualties or a larger disaster. However, the derailment severely damaged a track "block point," forcing authorities to immediately suspend all rail traffic along the corridor. The sudden disruption left several intercity and mail trains stranded at various stations in both directions, causing severe suffering to thousands of passengers particularly women, children, and elderly travelers. Mohera Railway Station Master Sohel Rana confirmed the incident and noted that a relief train has been requested from the Western Zone rail headquarters to clear the track. There were no structural defects found on our station tracks, Sohel Rana clarified. "Preliminary assessments suggest a mechanical fault within the train itself caused the derailment, though a formal investigation will confirm the exact cause. Railway officials estimated that recovery operations and track repairs will take several hours. Train operations on the route will resume once the line is deemed safe. Stranded passengers have appealed to authorities to expedite clearance efforts and ease public distress.
