Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said no conclusions should be drawn about the death of former Air Force officer Tahsif before the post-mortem examination is completed.
He made the remarks while addressing a passing-out parade as the chief guest at the Rajshahi Police Academy at around 11am on Thursday, October 29. The event marked the completion of training for the 27th probationary sergeant batch and the 43rd cadet sub-inspector batch of 2006.
“The death of former Air Force officer Tahsif cannot be commented on without a post-mortem examination. We will comment after learning all the facts,” the home minister said.
Speaking about the country’s current law and order situation, Salahuddin said the government’s top priority was to provide relief to the public and establish peace by bringing the situation under control.
He added that police played a leading role in establishing the rule of law. During the previous fascist government’s tenure, the police force, like other institutions, had suffered damage, he said. According to the minister, the force had gradually recovered from that weakened state and reached its current position.
Earlier, the body of the former Air Force officer was recovered from the Turag River on Wednesday afternoon, October 28. He was a retired flight lieutenant.
The Tongi River Police outpost under the Dhaka region of the River Police confirmed the information on Thursday morning.
Police said they received information through the national emergency helpline 999 that a body was floating in the Turag River near Rajabari Ghat under Uttarkhan Police Station.
Officers and personnel from the Gazipur office of the Tongi River Police outpost then went to the scene. The body was subsequently sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
