A pipeline-based and solar-powered safe water supply system was inaugurated in Madhya Amurbunia village under Nishanbaria Union of Morelganj upazila, Bagerhat on Wednesday afternoon.
Morelganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Habibullah inaugurated the system as chief guest. Implemented by the non-governmental organization DORP under its ODIAO project, the initiative is supported by Helvetas Bangladesh and funded by Charity: Water.
Coastal Bagerhat faces severe groundwater salinity and a crisis of drinking water driven by climate change, leaving residents vulnerable to waterborne illnesses. The newly built system purifies and distributes pond water using solar technology through 16 tap stands across the village. It will supply safe water for drinking, cooking and hygiene to around 1,200 residents across 250 households.
Speaking at the inauguration the UNO Habibullah highlighted how climate change disproportionately affects women and children in coastal areas. He commended the public-private partnership and urged community members to ensure proper maintenance of the infrastructure.
The event featured a discussion with local beneficiaries, leaders of the Maa Sangsad (Mothers' Forum), members of the Water Users' Committee and government officials including Upazila Engineer Md. Ariful Islam and Agriculture Officer Md. Saiful Islam. DORP Project Manager Nurefa Arju and Helvetas Engineer Md. Nasir Uddin were also present.
