AI-powered cameras are set to be installed on the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway to improve traffic discipline, with drivers who violate traffic laws expected to face automated cases based on AI monitoring, according to relevant sources.
The expressway is a key road link connecting the capital, Dhaka, with 21 districts in the southern region of Bangladesh. Of its 55-kilometre length, 35 kilometres lie within Munshiganj district. Reckless speeding and dangerous overtaking are among the main causes of accidents on the road.
According to the Munshiganj Fire Service and Civil Defence, approximately 589 road accidents occurred between June 25, 2022, when the Padma Bridge was inaugurated, and October 25, 2026. The accidents left 152 people dead and 950 injured.
Muhammad Shafiqul Islam, deputy assistant director of Fire Service and Civil Defence, told Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) that most accidents were caused by excessive speed, risky overtaking and violations of traffic laws.
During a recent visit to inspect development works in Munshiganj, Sheikh Robiul Alam, minister for road transport and bridges, railways, and shipping, said a project had been undertaken to bring the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway under AI camera surveillance.
National highways are already being monitored using AI cameras, he said. District and regional highways will gradually be brought under the system for round-the-clock surveillance, with legal action taken against those who violate traffic laws.
Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman, superintendent of police for the Highway Police’s Gazipur region, said reckless speeding was responsible for most accidents on the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway.
Plans are underway to bring the entire expressway under AI camera surveillance and use AI-based systems to initiate automated cases against drivers for speeding, dangerous overtaking and other traffic violations, he said.
Authorities expect that AI monitoring will help curb speeding and dangerous overtaking, encourage drivers to become more aware of road safety and improve compliance with traffic laws. These measures are expected to help restore discipline on the expressway.
Md Mominul Islam, sub-divisional engineer at the Munshiganj Roads and Highways Department, told BSS that speed-limit signs and road markings had been installed at various points to prevent accidents. CCTV cameras are also in place at several locations.
However, accidents continue to occur due to reckless speeding, risky overtaking, sudden U-turns, driver inattention, failure to obey traffic laws and dense fog, he said.
