The Election Commission (EC) has decided to hold union council elections across the country in seven phases with starting Nov 12 as the Election Commissioner Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah announced Monday.
Briefing reporters at Nirbachan Bhaban after a preparatory meeting led by Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin, Sanaullah said around 4,500 union councils nationwide would go to the polls.
He outlined the schedule of first phase on Nov 12 followed by Dec 13, Dec 30, Jan 17, Feb 4, Apr 22 and the final phase on May 27 next year. The first phase will cover 80 upazilas.
The EC will issue the official election schedule once the voting timeline is finalised, he added.
