The Patenga Container Terminal (PCT) at Chattogram Port has added 10 new rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes, bringing the total to 14. These cranes will boost container handling capacity within the terminal.
Under an agreement with the Chattogram Port Authority, Saudi port operator Red Sea Gateway Terminal (RSGT) is investing $25 million to fully equip the terminal by June next year.
The PCT, handed over to RSGT in June 2023 under a public-private partnership (PPP), is Bangladesh’s first port terminal operated long-term by a foreign company.
According to RSGT, each crane can lift containers weighing up to 41 tonnes and operates on a hybrid electric-diesel system, reducing fuel use and carbon emissions. The cranes are expected to begin operations in November.
RSGT Bangladesh CEO Erwin Haijes said the new equipment will enhance terminal efficiency, save energy, and support environmental sustainability.
