Ahead of the 13th National Parliament elections, members of the European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) held a discussion with local journalists in Faridpur on Monday evening.
The exchange of views took place at the Faridpur Press Club auditorium. Veronika Lomova, a long-term observer with the EU mission, addressed the meeting. She was accompanied by fellow observer Daniel Kerekes.
Lomova said the EU Election Observation Mission has deployed 28 long-term observer teams across Bangladesh. Her team is responsible for monitoring the Faridpur and Rajbari districts. The observers began their work about a week ago and will remain in the field until about a week after the election. She said the mission is meeting with election management bodies, political parties, and media representatives as part of its pre-election observation process.
Responding to a question about minority voter turnout, Lomova said the mission was not in a position to comment, noting that only a limited number of cases had been observed so far.
She added that any formal assessment would depend on decisions taken by the mission’s leadership in Dhaka. The EU mission’s preliminary findings will be shared at a press conference in Dhaka two days after the election.
