A distressing scene of animal cruelty and administrative neglect has surfaced in Kaliganj, where a severely sick horse has been left to suffer on public roads for an extended period. The animal, visible to passersby in the Tushbhandar Bazar area, is reportedly in a state of physical decay with rotting sores across its body.
Local residents report that the horse is barely able to walk and often collapses on the roadside or in busy market areas due to extreme weakness, hunger, and dehydration. Beyond the ethical concerns, the presence of the immobile animal on the streets is posing a significant risk to vehicular traffic and public safety.
Despite the horse’s deteriorating condition, locals claim that no animal welfare organizations or government authorities have intervened. There is a growing fear among the community that without immediate veterinary intervention and relocation to a shelter, the animal will succumb to its injuries.
Residents are urgently calling upon the Department of Livestock Services and the local administration to take humanitarian action before it is too late.
Following local outcry, several animal rights activists on social media have begun tagging the Lalmonirhat District Administration to facilitate a rescue. While the Department of Livestock Services has the capacity to treat the animal, a formal "ownerless" status often delays official intervention. Activists are pushing for the horse to be moved to a regional veterinary hospital for emergency wound care.
