Carlo Ancelotti is no miracle worker. After falling behind to Ismael Saibari’s brilliant opening goal, the Brazil manager relied on Vinícius Júnior to save the five-time World Cup winners from an embarrassing defeat in their 2026 opener.

Brazil struggled throughout much of an absorbing first half. Casemiro and Bruno Guimarães were overrun by a Moroccan midfield anchored by 18-year-old standout Ayyoub Bouaddi. However, in front of a passionate New Jersey crowd, Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior—often criticized for struggling on the international stage—stepped up to give Brazilian fans a reason to celebrate.

This was only Vinícius's 10th goal in his 50th appearance for the Seleção. With Neymar sidelined by a calf injury, Ancelotti knows Brazil's hopes for a sixth World Cup title rest heavily on the young winger. While Brazil possesses undeniable quality, glaring weaknesses remain. Morocco—the 2022 semi-finalists—ruthlessly exploited these gaps and nearly secured a late victory after a fumble by goalkeeper Alisson. Brazil improved in the second half following tactical changes, but Ancelotti has significant work ahead to make his team true contenders.

“We need to improve,” Ancelotti admitted. “This was a tough match, especially in the beginning. The team was anxious, but we can’t lose heart—you don’t win a World Cup based on your first match.”

Morocco head coach Mohamed Ouahbi, who replaced Walid Regragui in March, delivered on his promise of a strong performance. After an assured display from his team, he noted: “The players are disappointed because they wanted to win. In the second half, the rhythm dropped, but that is understandable against a team of this quality.”

Brazil's lineup showed early vulnerabilities, particularly with central defender Roger Ibañez deployed out of position at right-back. Morocco targeted him immediately. Brahim Díaz capitalized on Brazil's defensive struggles, delivering a sensational pass to Saibari, who casually lobbed the ball over Alisson to open the scoring.

Just as Brazil looked on the verge of conceding a second, Vinícius rescued his team. He collected a pass from Guimarães on the byline, outmaneuvered Neil El Aynaoui, and fired past goalkeeper Yassine Bounou from a tight angle.

Realizing his tactical missteps, Ancelotti substituted the struggling Casemiro and Ibañez at half-time, bringing on Fabinho and Danilo. The changes provided a much-needed structural fix, pushing Morocco back into their own half. Despite late pressure and a clear chance for Brazilian substitute Luis Henrique in stoppage time, Bounou held firm, securing a well-deserved 1-1 draw.
