The 2026 World Cup concluded with Spain defeating Argentina 1-0 in extra time at a packed New York-New Jersey stadium. Co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, the tournament’s expanded 48-team format delivered more matches, though traditional powerhouses—Argentina, Spain, France, and England—ultimately dominated the semi-finals.

Despite predictability at the top, underdogs provided tournament magic. Debutant Cape Verde won global hearts by drawing with Spain and Uruguay and forcing Argentina into extra time, while Norway thrilled fans by reaching their first-ever quarter-final.

Off the pitch, early skepticism about the US as a host vanished as Americans warmly welcomed international fans in what became known as the "Great American Sleepover". Co-host Canada also experienced a surge in soccer interest as their men's team impressively advanced to the last 16. However, the event was marred by serious challenges and tragedy.

In Mexico, celebrations over their first knockout win in 40 years turned fatal when crowd crushes claimed four lives. Additionally, soaring ticket prices and strict visa policies made this World Cup highly exclusive, effectively shutting out working-class and international fans. The US squad met expectations but exited in the round of 16, unaffected by a controversial intervention from President Trump regarding a player's red-card suspension.

Finally, the "Americanization" of football left a lasting mark. Halftime shows and mandated hydration breaks sparked debate among traditionalists. Yet, with coaches utilizing these pauses for tactical adjustments in a warming global climate, these innovations will likely become permanent fixtures in the sport.
