Police have arrested Joynal Mia (35), a fugitive suspect in a high-profile robbery case in Durgapur village of Sunamganj's Shantiganj upazila.
Joynal, son of the late Abdul Mannan of Durgapur, was apprehended during a joint operation by Shantiganj and Dirai police in the Kalinagar area of Dirai upazila around 2:00 am on Sunday (June 14).
According to police and local sources, the robbery occurred on the night of May 16. Shipon Mia, son of local Union Parishad (UP) member Jamal Uddin, was returning home from the Dirai market after completing a paddy business transaction. Around 9:00 pm, a gang of 10 to 15 armed men intercepted him near Afroz Mia's house in Durgapur.
The group—allegedly led by the primary suspect, Sifat, and the newly arrested Joynal—held Shipon hostage with locally made weapons. The attackers physically assaulted him before fleeing with a smartphone and Tk 5 lakh in cash.
Following the incident, UP member Jamal Uddin filed a case against 11 individuals at the Shantiganj Police Station. All suspects had been in hiding since the case was lodged.
Shantiganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Oli Ullah confirmed the arrest. "Based on the case filed by the victim's father, we have apprehended the second primary suspect," he stated. "Operations are ongoing to capture the remaining culprits. Legal proceedings against the arrested individual are currently underway."
