Nishi Rahman (38), the wife of a government official, has been arrested and sent to jail in connection with the horrific killing of eight newborn puppies in Ishwardi Upazila.

The accused, the wife of Hasanur Rahman Nayan (an officer of the Small Farmers Development Foundation), was apprehended late Tuesday night after Upazila Livestock Officer Aklima Khatun filed a case against her as the plaintiff.

Nishi Rahman was produced before Pabna's Amli Court-2 on Wednesday afternoon. Judge Tariqul Islam ordered her to be sent to jail following the hearing. Ishwardi Circle Additional Superintendent of Police Pranab Kumar stated that the accused admitted stuffing the puppies into a sack and leaving them on the pond bank due to annoyance over the barking, but claimed she did not know who threw them into the water. The incident went viral on social media, sparking outrage.

The puppies, born to a mother dog named Tom who lived at the Upazila Executive Officer's residence, were allegedly tied in a sack and drowned in the Upazila Parishad pond sometime Sunday night, with their bodies recovered on Monday morning.

Following the incident, the accused's husband, Hasanur Rahman Nayan, was ordered to vacate his government quarters.
