Severe landslides triggered by heavy monsoon rains have killed nine people, including eight Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar. The deadly collapses struck three refugee camps in Ukhia and a neighborhood in Cox’s Bazar city between Sunday night and Monday morning.
In Ukhia's Jamtali Camp, a landslide buried a shelter, claiming the lives of Mohammad Kamal Hossain, 44, his wife Humaira Begum, 39 and their four-year-old son. Ukhia Fire Service officials confirmed the recovery of their bodies.
In a separate tragedy at the Balukhali Camp, four individuals died when a hill collapsed onto their dwelling. The victims were identified as Umm Habiba, 27, Tanzina Akhter, 13 and two young siblings, aged five and three. Another landslide in the Kutupalong Camp killed a seven-year-old boy named Ekram.
Outside the refugee camps, a local man, Ali Akbar, died on Monday morning after a landslide struck his home in the Chhattar Ghona area of Cox's Bazar city. Locals rescued him, but he was later pronounced dead at Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital.
Cox’s Bazar has recorded over 150 millimeters of rainfall in the past 24 hours. Assistant Meteorologist Md. Abdul Hannan attributed the extreme downpour to an active monsoon and a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, warning that heavy rains could persist for another two days.
In response, local authorities have intensified evacuation efforts. Ukhia Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Panna Akhter stated that the administration is actively using loudspeakers to urge residents in high-risk hilly areas to relocate to safer shelters immediately to prevent further loss of life.
