Nuclear Scientist Dr. Latif's Two Years Shaping SUBST

Professor Dr. Sheikh Abdul Latif a Bangladeshi nuclear scientist with an internationally recognized career also played a key role in shaping Sunamganj University of Science and Technology (SUBST) during its formative years serving as Chairman of the Physics Department and Proctor from 2024 to 2026.

Latif earned his Doctor of Science degree from Tokyo Metropolitan University in Japan where he researched nuclear techniques for analyzing meteorite composition followed by post-doctoral work at Japan's Radioisotope Research Center.

He joined the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission in 1993 and spent nearly 25 years there also rising to Chief Scientific Officer before retiring voluntarily in 2018. He worked at the Institute of Nuclear Science and Technology and the Atomic Energy Research Establishment.

From 2009 to 2024, Dr. Sheikh Latif taught and researched at King Abdulaziz University in Saudi Arabia, specializing in nuclear physics, radiation protection and medical physics. His research spans environmental radioactivity, food radioactivity monitoring and a technique for tracking unmanned lunar spacecraft trajectories.

He has authored 39 papers in international journals, 16 in national journals, and contributed to multiple international conferences. He has also served three terms as General Secretary of the Retired Scientists Association of the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission.

According to university stakeholders Dr. Latif's international experience proved valuable in establishing SUBST's academic foundation during its early development. His two-year contribution is regarded as a notable chapter in the university's institutional history.
