The High Court has upheld a Tk.6.66 billion tax claim by the National Board of Revenue (NBR) against Grameen Kalyan an organisation founded by former interim government chief adviser Muhammad Yunus.
A bench led by Justice Mozibur Rahman Miah delivered the verdict on Thursday with disposing of the rule issued over Grameen Kalyan's challenge to the NBR's tax demand.
"As a result NBR's claim has been upheld" said Grameen Kalyan's lawyer, Khawaja Tanveer Ahmed.
Asked whether the organisation would appeal, Tanveer said Grameen Kalyan was considering moving to the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court with the next step to be decided after consulting the client. He added that the exact deadline for tax payment would become clear once the full verdict was published.
Grameen Kalyan had filed a writ petition with the High Court in 2017 challenging the validity of the NBR's tax demand. With the rule now disposed of and the claim upheld also the NBR is expected to proceed with collecting the outstanding tax.
