Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman announced Saturday that his party’s candidates will refuse government-allocated plots and duty-free vehicles if they are elected to parliament.
Addressing a campaign rally in Habiganj, Rahman stated that Jamaat officials would also be required to publicly disclose annual income and expenditure statements for themselves and their families. "The public has the right to know if their representatives are benefiting from public resources," Rahman said, promising that his party’s leaders would live like ordinary citizens.
During his speech, Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer alleged that massive amounts of wealth were siphoned out of Bangladesh over the last 15 years and vowed to hold those responsible accountable.
He pledged to end extortion rackets that he claimed currently target business owners and students. Rahman strongly defended the right to wear the hijab and criticized those who oppose religious dress, stating his party would protect "women’s dignity" at any cost.
"This money belongs to the country’s 180 million people," Rahman told supporters. "We will ensure that the country's resources are protected and that order is maintained."
