An unusual political scene has emerged in Lakshmipur-1 (Ramganj), where a son and father are campaigning for rival candidates and symbols in the upcoming national parliamentary election.
Mahbub Alam, the son, is contesting the election as a candidate of the National Citizen Party (NCP), using the party’s flower symbol. His father, Azizur Rahman, is openly campaigning for the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) candidate, seeking votes with the party’s sheaf of rice symbol.
Mahbub Alam is the brother of former information adviser Mahfuz Alam and is running as the nominee of the 10-party electoral alliance from the Lakshmipur-1 constituency. His father serves as the general secretary of Ichapur Union BNP.
According to local sources, Azizur Rahman took part in at least 18 roadside meetings from noon to evening on Friday in different areas of Ichapur Union under Ramganj upazila. During these events, he openly sought votes for BNP candidate Shahadat Hossain Selim.
Speaking to reporters, Azizur Rahman confirmed his role in the campaign. “Family is a personal matter, but politics is my ideology,” he said. “I have long been involved in BNP politics, and I cannot change my political position because of family ties. That is why I am campaigning for the BNP candidate. As a father, however, I pray for my son.”
When asked for his reaction, Mahbub Alam said he was aware of the situation but declined to comment. “You can ask my father about this,” he said.
The contrasting campaigns have drawn attention in the constituency, highlighting how political loyalties can diverge even within the same family.
