Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus called for the accelerated, integrated development of Bangladesh's transport sector—covering roads, railways, airways, and waterways—while strictly safeguarding nature, the environment, and rivers.
Speaking at an inter-ministerial meeting on the "Central Integrated Multimodal Transport Sector Master Plan of Bangladesh," he stressed that development must not harm rivers, which he called the nation's "lifeline" and a "great resource."
Prof. Yunus noted that the country's current transport system is "chaotic" and warned that failure to bring discipline could turn it into a "noose around the neck of the economy."
The Roads and Highways Department presented a preliminary strategic plan demonstrating how the entire system can be streamlined through coordination, focusing on the proper utilization and expansion of existing networks.
The Chief Adviser emphasized that the final plan must prioritize economic prosperity and incorporate regional and global communication systems.
BIDA Chairman announced plans to launch three new ports in Chattogram by 2030, underscoring the immediate need for effective road connectivity to these ports.
The meeting was attended by Advisers from Planning, Road Transport & Railways, Civil Aviation, Shipping, and Local Government, among other key officials.
