Persistent downpours are likely to disrupt the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha celebrations, with the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) warning that rainy weather may continue until next Saturday.
The Met Office has indicated a high probability of rain or thundershowers across major portions of five divisions, including Dhaka, on Thursday when the nation celebrates Eid. Furthermore, heavy to very heavy falls are expected to hit localized areas within four divisions.
"On Eid day, rain or thundershowers are likely at many places over Rajshahi, Khulna, Dhaka, Mymensingh, and Sylhet divisions," BMD Meteorologist Md. Tariful Newaz Kabir said on Tuesday. He added that Rangpur, Barishal, and Chattogram divisions will see a much lower likelihood of rain.
For the capital, morning and afternoon showers on Eid day are highly anticipated, which could complicate outdoor Eid congregations and the subsequent slaughtering of sacrificial animals. While heavy downpours risk straining city drainage systems with waste, afternoon showers could conversely help sanitation workers clear debris and reduce odor.
According to recent data, Sreemangal recorded the country's highest rainfall at 90mm in the 24 hours leading up to Tuesday evening, followed by Dhaka at 68mm. The Met Office's five-day outlook predicts fluctuating regional rainfall, accompanied by temporary gusty winds and lightning flashes, lasting through the weekend.
