The International Crimes Tribunal-2 is set to deliver its verdict today, April 9, in the murder case of Abu Sayeed, a student of Begum Rokeya University (BRUR) who became the first martyr of the July student-led uprising.
The proceedings, led by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, will conclude a trial that has gripped the nation. All six accused currently in custody were produced before the court this morning. Chief Prosecutor Md. Aminul Islam confirmed that the announcement will be broadcast live on Bangladesh Television (BTV).
The tribunal finalized the date for the verdict on March 5, after concluding arguments from both the prosecution and the defense on January 27.
Abu Sayeed was killed on July 16, 2024, during the anti-discrimination student movement. His death sparked a nationwide escalation of protests, ultimately leading to the fall of the Awami League government on August 5.
Of the 30 individuals accused in the case, six are currently behind bars Amir Hossain (Sub-Inspector of Police), Sujan Chandra Roy (Police Constable), Shariful Islam (BRUR Dean), Emran Chowdhury Akash (General Secretary, banned Chhatra League BRUR unit), Rafiul Hasan Russell (Deputy Registrar), Anwar Parvez Apel (University Employee)
The formal trial began on August 27 last year, following the framing of charges against all 30 accused on August 6. The court previously appointed four state defense lawyers on July 22 to represent the fugitives in the case.
