Despite 40mm of rainfall over the last 24 hours, air pollution in the capital remains stubbornly high. According to data from IQAir, Dhaka ranked sixth among the world's most polluted cities on Thursday morning.
At 9:15 AM, Dhaka recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) score of 167, categorizing the air as 'unhealthy.' This reflects a slight increase from Wednesday’s score of 163, defying the usual trend where rain washes away atmospheric pollutants.
Beijing topped the global list with a "very unhealthy" score of 229, followed by Delhi (208). Other cities in the "unhealthy" bracket included Chiang Mai (175), Hangzhou (170), and Kathmandu (169).
Health experts warn that AQI scores between 151 and 200 pose risks to the general public, particularly those with respiratory issues. When levels exceed 200 ("very unhealthy"), children, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses are advised to remain indoors, while others should strictly limit outdoor exertion.
