Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and Leader of the Opposition, has called for observing Independence and National Day with due solemnity while highlighting unfulfilled national expectations.
In a statement issued Tuesday night, Dr. Rahman noted that 55 years after independence, the core goals of the liberation war—equality, human dignity, and social justice—remain largely unrealized.
Reflecting on the student-led mass uprising of July 2024, the Jamaat leader emphasized that the end of 16 years of authoritarian rule has paved the way for a new political environment. He stressed that the public will no longer tolerate dictatorial behavior and demands the absolute freedom of movement and expression.
Dr. Rahman expressed concern over the government’s delay in implementing the "July National Charter 2025." He pointed out that since the charter received 70% support in a national referendum, the government's hesitation is a direct defiance of the public will.
Furthermore, he called for a "non-discriminatory society" free from bribery, corruption, and extortion. He urged for peaceful coexistence among all citizens, regardless of religion or caste.
Concluding his message, the Opposition Leader paid tribute to the martyrs of 1971 and those killed in the July 2024 movement. Amid global instability, particularly in the Middle East, he urged the nation to remain united to protect Bangladesh's sovereignty and peace.
