The government plans to introduce a women-only electric bus service in Dhaka within the next six months to improve safety and comfort for female passengers.

The decision was discussed at a meeting on Monday (March 2) at the Secretariat between Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Professor Dr. Md. Shamsul Haque of the Civil Engineering Department at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).

Officials emphasized the need for a people-friendly transport system. Women often face difficulties due to the lack of safe public transportation. To address this, electric buses operated by female drivers will be introduced on selected routes in the capital.

The meeting also included discussions on expanding urban transport infrastructure. Authorities considered launching a monorail system alongside the metro rail to reduce traffic congestion and provide affordable passenger services.

In addition, there were preliminary talks about introducing high-speed train services in the future to improve intercity travel across the country.

Further details, including routes and implementation timelines, are expected to be announced later.
