Gazipur youth dies after alleged assault; one arrested

A man died after allegedly being assaulted by a group of individuals in Sreepur, Gazipur, over a previous dispute. Police have arrested one suspect in connection with the incident.

The deceased, Azizul Islam, 38, was the son of Hanif Mia of Paitalbari village in Barmi Union under Sreepur upazila.

According to family members and local residents, Azizul had an argument with his younger brother Faizul on Monday afternoon over a family matter. Relatives later resolved the dispute.

Family members alleged that, taking advantage of the situation and due to a previous enmity, Shamim, Jamal Uddin, Hridoy, Shahin and several associates attacked Azizul with iron rods and locally made weapons. They allegedly struck him repeatedly on the head, leaving him seriously injured.

Relatives rescued Azizul and took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he died around 3:00 am while undergoing treatment.

Sreepur Police Station Inspector (Operations) Sanchay Saha said police filed a case after receiving a complaint from the victim's family. Following Azizul's death, police will seek to add murder charges to the case through the court.

He said the main accused, Md. Shamim, was arrested in a police operation, and efforts are underway to arrest the remaining suspects.
